Our Wonderful Watersheds: Long Island's Water & Future
Educators Grades 4-9 (and High School Research)
Clean drinking water is often taken for granted in the USA, yet worldwide it is a rare treat. This course allows you to widen the perspective of your students by studying your local water systems, and then comparing them to other areas around the world. You will learn new ways to utilize your own watershed in your classroom! Activities, lessons and field-trips / excursions will focus on all areas in our local watershed including groundwater, rivers, estuaries, the Long Island Sound, the Great South Bay, and the Atlantic Ocean.
NEW: As part of the day, take a hike in Fire Island National Park...out to the breach at Old Inlet. As a product of Hurricane Sandy, we have an active learning laboratory in Bellport Bay. Learn about the changes in the dunes, the wildlife, the health of the Bay, as well as understanding the dynamic political situation surrounding it. And in response to algal blooms in Peconic Bay there are investigations into groundwater pollution. What are the connections?
Ancient Technology
Social Studies Grades 4-8, Technology Middle-High School
This course is designed to give teachers a practical view of human ingenuity by studying the ancient technology behind our civilization, and what it has turned into today. What better way to bring alive the past than learning how to make tools like arrowheads, spears, baskets, and pottery. We will also have a crash course in wilderness survival, fire-making, and ancient hunting methods. When you finish each activity you will have an ancient artifact to use in class! Plus, you will have learned a skill with which you can continue to refine your technique. You will also develop lesson plans based on these artifacts to enhance your curriculum.
